STATS SA releases its mid-year population estimates
Statistics South Africa released its mid-year population estimates.
- It is estimated that there are now, as at mid-2011, 50,59 million people in South Africa.
- Just more than half of the population are female – 52% (26,07 million).
- In 2011, there are just over 5 million children aged 0-4 in South Africa (5,189,528)
- There are just a little more than 15,5 million children aged 0-19 in South Africa
- Approximately 11,3 million people live in Gauteng (22,4%), 10,8 million people live in Kwa-Zulu Natal (21,4%); 6, 8 million live in the Eastern Cape (13,50%); 5,5 million in Limpopo (10,98%); 5,2 million in the Western Cape (10,45%); 3,6 million (7,23%) in Mpumalanga; 3,2 million in the North West (6,43%); and just over 1 million in the Northern Cape (2,17%).
- Life expectancy is estimated at 54,9 years for males and 59,1 years for females
- The infant mortality rate for 2011 is estimated at 37,9, down from 53 in 2001
- Fertility rates have declined from 2,92 children per woman in 2001 to 2,35 children in 2011.
- Overall HIV-prevalence is estimated to be approximately 10,6% amounting to 5,38 million people living with HIV in 2011. An estimated 16,6% of the population aged 15-49 years is HIV-positive
- An estimated 63,600 new HIV infections in 2011 will be among children aged 0-14 years
- The number of people aged 15 years and older receiving ART in 2010 was 1,058,399, compared to 101,416 in 2005. The number of children receiving ART in 2010 was 105,123, compared to 11,959 in 2005.
- The estimated percentage of babies receiving cotrimoxazole is 38%, compared to 2% in 2005.
- The number of children orphaned by AIDS has almost double since 2005, from 199,636 to 377,097 in 2011.
