The Minister of Education has approved and published the National Curriculum Statements for Grades R -12 as National Education Policy. (Government Gazette 34600, 12 September 2011)

The National Curriculum Statement comprises:

• The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements for all approved subjects for Grades R -12.
• National Policy pertaining to the Programme of Promotion Requirements of National Curriculum Statements Grades R -12.
• National Protocol for Assessment Grades R -12.

The National Curriculum Statement Grades R -12 will be implemented incrementally as follows:

• January 2012 in Grades R -3 and Grade 10
• January 2013 – Grades 4-6 and Grade 11
• January 2014 – Grades 7-9 and Grade 12.

In addition, the Minister has specified minimum outcomes and standards and a national process and procedures for the assessment of learner achievement.
